Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem is an action RPG based on dark fantasy. The debut French studio Wolcen was responsible for the creation of the game, made up of young developers who combined their passion and experience with the CryEngine engine. The title was funded largely through a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

In Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, the player takes on a character (male or female) rescued as a child by a United Republic of people officer named Gerald heimlock. After this event, the protagonist, along with his friends Valeria and Edrik, enters the Military Academy. There, the group is subjected to extremely grueling training.

Over time, all three become powerful warriors. As the human Republic is at war with the Brotherhood of Dawn, the team is assigned to Gerald heimlock’s troops, whose goal is to take over the enemy’s capital, Stormfall. There, however, not everything goes according to plan – the underground creatures known as Svriir have almost completely destroyed the city.

In addition, a new adversary appears on the horizon – the Alliance of the Blind – seeking to restore power to the Fallen Prince of fury Ahriman. If the people’s Republic is defeated, the world will change beyond recognition.

In general terms, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem does not deviate significantly from the standards set by modern hack’n’slash Productions. The action of the game is observed in an isometric perspective, and during exploration, a whole host of Main and side tasks are performed, most of which focus on fighting monsters and other opponents. During skirmishes we use a wide arsenal of weapons (each of the available weapon models is distinguished by different mechanics and available combos), armor and magical abilities.

However, creators from Wolcen Studio introduced several solutions to the gameplay that brought some freshness to the genre’s established patterns. One of these is a system of asymmetric armor that allows m.in. for wearing different types of armor on the left and right shoulder. The game also eschews the typical skill trees: passive abilities are placed on a rotating disc, thus combining skills from various categories to create unique synergies. By adding to this the development of Statistics and active skills, we have an extremely wide ability to personalize the character’s development path.
