In terms of plot, the game is a continuation of the original trilogy. The production rewrote the story of the series until the conclusion of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, erasing all later parts from the canon. After the events of the third installment, the tercet villains, namely Neo Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy and Uka Uka, were imprisoned on a distant planet. The villains spent decades trying to escape from this prison, but were eventually successful, plucking a huge hole in the space-time continuum. The player’s task is to stop them before they take over the entire multiverse.

Crash Bandicoot 4 is a development from earlier releases. So we get a three-dimensional platformer in which we have to traverse colored maps, collect objects, avoid traps and other threats, and eliminate enemies, mainly by jumping on their heads or hitting them while spinning pirouettes.

The production features extensive platform mechanics. Players m.in. run on walls, swing on ropes and slide down railings. In addition, during the adventures, we gather quantum masks, offering powers to bend reality and manipulate time. The game does not offer full freedom to explore the world. The levels look different, but they all take the form of a tunnel leading us along a mostly linear route from start to finish. The game features clashes with bosses and occasional sections modeled on two-dimensional platformers.

The game features an attractive three-dimensional graphics frame made in a strongly cartoonish style. The authors opted for a fresh graphic style that differs from those of the previous series, but retains a specific brand vibe.
